Announcements for September 21, 2010

1.  Attention all creative writers! The Writing Club is looking for student writers in grade 5-8 who enjoy writing articles, poems, or stories for the Bulldog Press, the student newspaper.

 

Our first meeting will take place NEXT THURSDAY the 30th of September from 2:40-3:10 in the alien lab by the library.

 

In order to attend, you must have a signed permission slip.  You can pick one up in the office.

Mr. Mattison and Mrs. McDermott look forward to seeing you then and be prepared to have fun writing!

 

2.  The Conestoga Boys Varsity Soccer Team is playing against Lower Merion at 7:00 pm  tonight at Teamer Field.  It is TEYSA/FC Europa night so anyone wearing their TEYSA/FC Europa soccer jersey will get in free. 

 

3.  Homework Club starts this week. All interested students should see their guidance counselor for a permission slip as soon as possible. Homework Club will meet in Room 133 at 2:35 until 4:00 P.M. 5th and 6th grade students can take the Shuttle Bus home. 7th and 8th grade students must make arrangements for transportation home.

 

4.  A reminder to all students that Thursday is picture day.  Please bring your completed envelope with you to school on Thursday to hand to the photographer.

2.  Homework Club starts this week. All interested students should see their guidance counselor for a permission slip as soon as possible. Homework Club will meet in Room 133 at 2:35 until 4:00 P.M. 5th and 6th grade students can take the Shuttle Bus home. 7th and 8th grade students must make arrangements for transportation home.

 

3.  On this day in 1973, in a highly publicized "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, top women's player Billie Jean King, 29, beats Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1 ranked men's player. Riggs, a self-proclaimed male chauvinist, had boasted that women were inferior, that they couldn't handle the pressure of the game and that even at his age he could beat any female player.

2.      On this day in 1620, The Mayflower sails from Plymouth, England, bound for the New World with 102 passengers. The ship was headed for Virginia, however, stormy weather and navigational errors forced the Mayflower off course, and on November 21 the "Pilgrims" reached Massachusetts, where they founded the first permanent European settlement in New England in late December.

 

3.      On September 16, 1908, Buick Motor Company head William Durant spends $2,000 to incorporate General Motors in New Jersey.

  1. On this day in 1857, William Howard Taft is born in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Taft was born into a politically active family; his father had served as President Ulysses S. Grant’s secretary of war. He attended college at Yale University, graduating second in his class. He then attended Cincinnati Law School earning his law degree in 1880. Taft joined the faculty at Yale University, where he taught law until 1900.  He was elected the 27th President in 1908.

Announcements for Monday, September 13, 2010

1.      Today is health screening day for vision, hearing, height and weights.  Every student will receive a pass in homeroom. Please report to the library at the time written on your pass.  And remember, if you have glasses; bring them with you to the library!

 

2.      The Unlimited football team will begin practice today. Players will catch the shuttle bus to Valley Forge out front at 2:40.  Players should dress to practice outdoors and bring both their sneakers and their cleats. Practice will end at 4:15.

 

3.      All sports forms are due by lunch today.

 

4.      Attention 7th and 8th grade field hockey player:  We will meet today at 3:00 in room 110 before going outside. 

 

5.      Attention any student wishing to join TV Studio:  There will be a meeting right after school in room 226.  The paperwork needed to join TV Studio will be given out so it is important that you attend.  If you cannot attend please see Ms. Crocker or Mr. Ferris.

 

6.      Attention all 5th grade chorus members.  Chorus begins today and tomorrow.  Please check the chorus bulletin board outside room 171 to see which day you are assigned to come to chorus.  Please see Mrs. Gyza if you have any questions.
