Announcements for Monday, January 31, 2011

1.     Attention 8th Grade:  Mr. Sola will meet with 8th graders during their 7th and 8th period Advisory sections on Wednesday February 2nd to discuss the upcoming Conestoga Course Selection Process.  On Wednesday, students should report to their Advisory classroom - and the Advisory teacher will take their class to Large Group Room 12 for the presentation.  All students should bring their Program of Studies booklet with them.


 

2.     The yearbook staff is to see Mr. Frescoln sometime today in regard to our deadlines

 

3.     Should anyone on our staff have or know the whereabouts of some cardboard carpet cores please let Mr. Frescoln know. The play production is in need of them for props.

 

4.     Attention all Model United Nations club members attending the field trip today to the art museum. You should be downstairs by the office at 8:30 ready to go.

  1. It's time for the What a Life! Program to start again. This year, the theme is Global Awareness. You'll learn more about it during your class meetings on Wednesday.

 

  1. On January 25, 1924, the first Winter Olympics take off in style at Chamonix in the French Alps.  Spectators were thrilled by the ski jump and bobsled as well as 12 other events involving a total of six sports.  The ‘International Winter Sports Week’, as it was known, was a great success, and in 1928 the International Olympic Committee officially designated the Winter Games, staged at St. Moritz, Switzerland, as the second Winter Olympics.

 

  1. Writing Club will not meet this week. If you have an article to finish up, please see Mr. Mattison or Mrs. McDermott to see about a way to get it done. We will meet again next week and begin brainstorming ideas for the second edition of the Bulldog Press.

  1. On this day in 1961, on the newly renovated east front of the United States Capitol, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was inaugurated as the 35th president of the United States. During his famous inauguration address, Kennedy, declared that "the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans" and appealed to Americans to "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

The PTO is organizing a student book swap.  It's a fun way to encourage reading.  Students share their gently used, middle school appropriate books with other students in exchange for new reading material that is free. Book swap tables are set up at the front and back entrances this week. When you drop off a book, be sure to take a ticket to participate in the swap. Today is the last day for book drop off.

 

Then on January 18th, 19th, and 20th students will be able to go to the large group room during activity and pick out new books.  Students will be able to select as many new books as they dropped off the week before.

 

  1. Your logo could be featured on this year’s Seussical Jr. t-shirt!  Design a logo that best represents Seussical Jr. The Musical and the characters of Dr. Seuss.  See your art teacher or the flyer on the musical bulletin board for more information.  Logos are due to the main office by today.

 

  1. While enjoying the long winter weekend holiday, please remember those less fortunate, who will be grateful for a warm meal. The Martin Luther King Casserole Project is a great way to help! Students are asked to purchase the ingredients for a casserole, combine the ingredients, freeze the casserole and bring it to school between 7-8am on Tuesday, Jan 18. The tins will be available after school today or look on the TEMS website for instructions.

  1. The Conestoga Middle School Ice Hockey Team won the Christmas Tournament at Ice Line defeating Bishop Shanahan-O'Hara in the final game by a score of 9 to 3. The team, a combination of players from the Maroon and Gray teams, defeated Spring Ford, Haverford, Shanahan-O'Hara and West Chester in order to make the finals. Stop by to see the tournament trophy on display in the trophy case by the large gym. Come out to support the ice hockey team on Sunday, January 10th as the Stoga Gray team plays Haverford, Sunday, January 16th as the Stoga Maroon team versus Lower Merion and on January 31st when Stoga A versus Radnor.
