  1. Attention 8th graders…There are only 10 days left to reserve your copy of Memories 2011.  This program will be shown only once at the 8th grade Recognition Ceremony, but for $10 a copy will be made for you to own.  Copies can be reserved in room 212, or in the main office.

 

  1. The famous tower clock known as Big Ben, located at the top of the 320-foot-high St. Stephen's Tower, rings out over the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the first time on this day in 1859.

 

  1. Today is the birthday of poet Walt Whitman, born in 1819 in West Hills, Long Island, and raised in Brooklyn.  In 1855, he self-published a slim volume of poems called Leaves of Grass, which he continued to revise until his death.  He spent the Civil War comforting both Union and Confederate soldiers. His poem "Oh Captain, My Captain," mourned Lincoln's assassination.
